Today, it's trash day. That means we get rid of all the crap that we won't take with us and all the trash we have been saving up. We have hired a Toyota van at a local rental company , which costs us only 49 euro's for a whole day. At 10:00 we drove to the rental company to pick up the van, and at 11:00 we started stuffing the van with branches and bags of cut grass / weeds and other flora. Now usually this would be like a living hell for me since I have hayfever, but today we're "lucky" and it rains. So , in between showers we pick up the wet plants full of spiders and other nasties and slowly fill up the van. At 12:30 the van is full and that means we're right on time since the public dump place opens at 13:00 ( I guess they sleep in every morning ). The drive isn't very long, at most 15 minutes, but the spiders falling from the ceiling of the van make it an interesting ride. Once at the dump, we pay our 5 euro entrance fee and dump our stuff.
Then it's back to pickup the next batch of plants and rubbish. At 14:30 we've got ourselves another full van, and off we go , another 5 euro's entrance fee and some heavy bags of plaster and rubbish later, we set off for our last trip. At 16:45 we're done, and the dump place closes at 17:00 already. Since we have to deliver the rental van cleaned up and all fueled up at 17:45, we must hurry to make the 17:00 deadline.
So we race in the van as quickly as we can to the dump , and luckily we manage to arrive exactly at 17:00. But the gates are already closed ! The 4 bodybuilders are drinking tea inside their little house on the public dump site, waving at us , or should I say, waving us away. So I send in Kim to sweetly and kindly ask them to open the gates because we have a rental van and really can't do anything else than to get rid of the trash at the dump site. After a few seconds, Kim comes back, shaking her head. So , I unbuckle and go in myself. I ask them why the gate is already closed because it's only 17:00 and they should have been open till 17:00. They reply with "sorry we're closed, perhaps you can ask the other dump place if you can dump it there ?". This comment ofcourse was complete rubbish, because they would be closed at 17:00 also, it was a trick to get rid of us so they could enjoy their early friday afternoon. I said "Well, I don't have a choice do I ? What do you want me to do ? Dump it in front of your gate ?". Their reply was little more than "sure... ". I then told them that I would dump it right there if they wouldn't open the door, and I got a more serious reply back "No you won't". I then realized that this discussion would get nowhere and that the longer they stalled, the more I would be pushed into the losing corner.
I walked back to the van, opened the doors and started to unload the rubbish on their front step. I don't think these 4 bulky guys expected this , 1 of them came walking out ( but stayed at a safe distance from me ) and said "You can't do that !". I answered "Yes I can !"
Then another guy shouted "You'll get in trouble for this..!", to which my reply was "Sure , call the police if you want, I'm unloading now". This same guy then proceeded to show us that he was on the telephone ( probably with the police or his boss ). 5 minutes later, our van was empty and we drove off in a hurry, making sure we'd be gone anyone arrived. Whoever would arrive would mean trouble for us, and we had our IELTS exams the next day to worry about !
We cleaned the van at home but didn't have time to fill the van up. At exactly 18:45 we delivered the van at the rental place, and at 18:50 we were gone. In my rear-view mirror I saw the policecar drive onto the rental place, just as we drove around the corner, so I told Kim "Well we're probably going to hear something from that... amazing that they don't have anything better to do on a friday night, like catching robbers or real criminals !".Once home, my mobile phone rang : "This is the police. Is this Mr Lex ?" I answered "Yes". The officer at the other side of the line proceeded "We will need to speak to you at the police station". I knew exactly why , so I replied "ah yes, about the dump site problem"
I was requested to come to the police station asap and explain why I had "littered the streets of a public dump site". I explained the story and the police officer understood my reasons.
Overall result : We got a fine of 150 euro's for 'littering'. Sigh...
